Prophet of the Sun Russell Blanchard Smith 9781470079048 Books Reviews
Russell is a spectacular story teller! With his mastery of the written word, he is able to take the reader on an Indiana Jones like ride that seamlessly weaves in history, spirituality, adventure and mystery all in one! Can't wait to see what's in store for our main Calvin in future books to come!
While reading "Prophet of the Sun" I found myself constantly googling the artifacts, locations, characters & historical events Russell Smith so cleverly placed in this story. Fascinating!!! The next time I am in NYC I will have to make seeing Cleopatra's Needle in Central Park a priority. Perhaps I will make my visit late at night with a shovel and crowbar. I'm dying to know what Henry Hurlburt actually placed in his box under the obelisk.
Russell Smith has written a thriller that melds history, reformed theology, and some subtle and not-so-subtle nods to movies and books that many readers are familiar with. And he does it without resorting to the sensational speculation that characterized such books as "The da Vinci Code". The characters are well-defined and easy to relate to. look forward to future works by this author.
I was not sure what to expect when I downloaded this book. I was expecting a somewhat relgious or motivational story line. I was not expecting a thriller of a mystery where I could not wait to read on to see how the story developed. Every time I thought I knew how the story would end, I was proven wrong and was eager to read more and form a new ending in my mind. The characterts were very warm and real and each had struggles they were trying to make sense of and rise above. I am very eager to see if there will be a sequel to this book!
Entertaining, engaging, informative and thought provoking, Prophet of the Sun delivers a multi-faceted experience in its 234 pages. While enjoying the mystery and the plot twists, I also found myself learning more about an ancient culture, and it served to whet my appetite to know even more (a very good sign). I also particularly loved the way the author allowed us to watch Calvin wrestle with his faith. His struggles were so familiar and so authentic. The author reminds us that there are no quick fixes or magic platitudes that whisk away our darkest moments, but even when we can't find Him our faithful God is there. A great read!
Prophet of the Sun is a story I didn't know that I wanted to hear, told in the manner I needed to hear it. Russel Smith has an amazing knowledge of ancient cultures, a solid orthodox understanding of grace and redemption, a wounded healer's approach to grief, loss, pain and faith, and he tells a story like my Irish Grandfather. I am anxiously awaiting his next offering, and truly felt Iike this novel was a gift to me personally. As a minister who has recently experienced great loss, at times I felt like he was reading my mail. Other times I longed for Rev. Poteat's experience of being set free, but mostly I was ministered to in a very gentle way that validated my own loss and gave me great hope.
Are you looking for a fun, richly-satisfying read? Do you like stories that weave together disparate topics like theology, archaeology and secret societies? Are you the type who enjoys stories with long-buried clues and secret puzzles solved by amateur detectives? Then Russell Blanchard Smith's "Prophet of the Sun" is for you! Smith delivers a wonderfully entertaining romp, smartly written and liberally sprinkled with wit and nudge-nudge-wink-wink references to other stories. (I counted three "Indiana Jones" references - and 50 cool points to you if you can spot the nod to "Bleak House"). In the midst of all this fun is the story of three people who come together in a quest for a hidden cache of Egyptian artefacts a pastor finding his way back from the depths of grief, a professor who has just had the ground of her career fall out from under her, and a dot-com millionaire who has gotten in over his head with both the government and a local cult. Together, as they piece together the clues long buried by previous adventurers, they also exorcise their metaphorical demons and find a new way to live and a Lord to live for. You'll be entertained and satisfied from start to finish - a must read!
