Death was not uncommon in 1830s Ohio. But murder?
In a strict, religious society in 1830s rural Ohio, a 16-year-old girl is murdered because she's pregnant, but the only person who suspects it wasn't an accident is Adelaide, a young midwife, who worries that the remedy she gave the girl for a "woman's ailment" caused her death. Adelaide's husband, Benjamin, fearful that they'll be banned from the prosperous community, forbids her from questioning the girl's death. But a mistake she made years ago cost the life of a mother and her unborn babe, and Adelaide vowed to never let another mother die.
Pressure mounts when Adelaide is accused of harming the girl, but the allegation only fuels her determination to find the killer, even though she begins to suspect that her husband might be involved in the girl's death. And the more she investigates, not only does she start to question her own faith and beliefs, but she finds herself attracted to an unlikely man in the community, a man who has vowed to remain celibate. Then her questions alert the outside authorities, and now this isolated community is invaded by the very society they had shunned.

I love action/mystery stories that feature strong women. Generally I don't read historical fiction because, well, I miss the fingerprints and cell phones. But the description of "Cover" sounded so interesting that I decided to give it a try and I am very glad that I did. This novel works on every level: the reader learns about a period of history that most are probably unfamiliar with; the whodunnit portion is as well done as any I have read; and the main character demonstrates a way of getting things done when, perhaps, you are not the one - in this case even the class - with any real power. Since our power relationships always put us below someone or some group, we can all learn from Adelaide. "Cover" is one of the very few works of fiction which I am likely to read again, perhaps more than once, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.Product details

Cover Her Body (Audible Audio Edition) Eleanor Sullivan Moira Driscoll Books Reviews
I found this novel very interesting from a historical perspective. The community of Zoar, Ohio, really did exist and the customs and religious beliefs are the basis of the plot for this well-written mystery.
The characters and their struggles to adhere to their duty and the strict rules of the community form the backdrop to the motive for murder. The main character, Adelaide, is engaging and her struggles to uphold the rights of the women in her community is well depicted. Benjamin, her husband, objecting strongly to her search for the truth about the murder of a young woman, is torn between his love for his wife and his obligation to the community.
The author brings the life and times of the Zoar Village to life with deceptively simple language, drawing the reader into the action. I found myself being very indignant on behalf of the women and particularly of Adelaide. Cover Her Body is well deserving of praise and I shall be looking for another Singular Village Mystery in the future.
I did not get a feeling of having read a "murder mystery" by the end of the book.....it was more about the way of the "Zoar" life.....liked the drama but the end left me a little unsatisfied.....the book starts out with a slow dark take on the murder that should develop into a turbulent vortex (IMO) which it did not; (again IMO) but its a great read, full of details & drama.
In the small Separatist community of Zoar, Adelaide is the community midwife and healer. She finds a woman in the river and pulls her out. The community thinks the woman drowned, but Adelaide knows better. There was no water in the woman's lungs. The woman's brother-in-law believes Adelaide gave her something that killed her, the community leader believes it was just an accident, and Adelaide herself worries that maybe her husband had something to do with the woman's demise,
This historical mystery is set in the early 1800's in a commune of German immigrants who call themselves ''Separatists". Their move to America was driven by their desire for religious freedom. It is interesting that the protagonist is characterized as a strong, independent, and ethical woman. I was surprised to read, in the author's afterword, that the sect actually existed in Zoar, Ohio during that period. This book is a fascinating read and I enthusiastically recommend it.
Great historical murder novel about a little known religious culture from Germany that landed in a spot they named Zoar, Ohio in the 1800's. Being historically correct, it gives insight to how they lived, their inter-personalities, medicines and agriculture. I actually read it twice. The only critique I can give is I would like it to be longer and a little more character development in the beginning to get to know the characters better early on. But reading the intro on the cover helped a lot. I absolutely loved it. Can't wait for the next one.
Cover Her Body transports us to the settlement of Zoar, OH in 1833, where a young woman has been found dead. The reader is provided a glimpse into the subtle and complex issues of the era, issues that are amplified by the small size of the Separatist settlement. The reader walks side by side with a flesh and blood young midwife who fiercely cares about her community and challenges rules and practices that restrict the rights of women, harm the family unit, and hide the truth. One feels the numbing cold, smells the fresh beauty spring, and feels the frustration and fear of Adelaide as she becomes a target. It is a fun, educational, well-researched,and meaningful read written by a very versatile author.
This book is a pleasant mixture of historical and mystery novel. It takes place during the 18th Century in the community of Zoarites, who settled in Ohio running away from religious prosecution in Germany. The main character is Adelaide, a midwife who sets out to solve a murder, insisting on it even if this creates a lot of trouble for her and for her community. We find out about the history and customs of this community while we are drawn into the mystery of who has killed Johanna, and why. The narrative keeps a lively pace, bringing historical community alive without detriment to the intrigue it unfolds. The characters are well defined, from a psychological point of view, their inner struggles and contradictions (especially Adelaide's) helping to make them believable.
In short, I've enjoyed the book and I would recommend it to readers who like to be absorbed by mystery while reading about past times.
